Laser hair removal for men: what to expect

Author Published Reading time9 min

If keeping up with shaving, trimming or waxing takes more time than you’d like, laser hair removal may be worth considering. It targets hair follicles to reduce regrowth over a series of appointments, so there may be less hair to manage. It doesn’t guarantee that every hair will disappear for good.

At W Medical Aesthetics in Adelaide, we start by looking at your skin, your hair and the areas you’d like to treat. We’ll talk through whether laser hair removal is suitable and what you can realistically expect before planning anything.

What is laser hair removal for men?

Laser hair removal uses controlled light energy to target hair follicles and reduce unwanted growth. For men, it can be used on facial or body hair, with the approach adjusted to suit the skin, hair and area being treated.

You might consider it for areas that are difficult to keep up with, such as the back, chest, shoulders, neck or face. For some men, the goal is simply to spend less time shaving or waxing.

The aim is to reduce hair growth over time. How much reduction you see can be influenced by your hair thickness, hormones, genetics and the area you’re treating, so results won’t be the same for everyone.

How does laser hair removal work for men?

The pigment in your hair absorbs the laser’s light energy. That energy becomes heat, which damages the follicle and can slow future growth. The settings are adjusted for your skin type, hair and the area being treated.

The laser used matters too, because different skin tones and hair types respond differently. During your consultation, we’ll assess both and explain which approach may suit you.

Not all hairs are at the same stage of growth when you have a session. That’s why treatment usually involves several appointments rather than a single visit.

Why do you need more than one session?

Each hair moves through three main stages:

  • Anagen: the hair is actively growing

  • Catagen: growth slows as the follicle moves into a transition stage

  • Telogen: the follicle is resting

Laser treatment works best on hairs in the active growth stage. Further appointments allow us to treat hairs that weren’t in that stage at an earlier visit.

When planning your sessions, we’ll consider:

  • How dense and thick your hair is

  • The area you’d like to treat

  • Your skin tone and hair colour

  • How your hair responds as treatment progresses

Which areas can be treated?

Laser hair removal can be used on several areas of the body. Where you choose to have it is a personal decision, but each area still needs to be assessed before treatment.

Common areas and reasons for considering treatment include:

Treatment area

Why men may consider it

Back

Managing thick hair that can be hard to reach

Chest

Spending less time on regular grooming

Shoulders

Managing hair that is awkward to trim

Neck

Exploring an alternative when shaving causes irritation

Face

Reducing unwanted facial hair

Arms and legs

Reducing the amount of body hair to maintain

Your clinician will look at the skin and hair in the area you want to treat. You can also talk about how much hair you’d like to reduce and whether laser is a suitable way to approach it.

Could laser hair removal suit you?

Laser hair removal may be an option if you’d like less hair to manage. Being male doesn’t determine whether it will work for you; your skin and hair type matter more.

You might want to discuss it if you:

  • Shave or wax more often than you’d like

  • Would prefer less body hair to maintain

  • Have unwanted hair in particular areas

  • Want to understand which options suit your skin and hair

At your appointment, we’ll assess the area you’re considering and discuss your skin, allergies and any other relevant health information. This helps us work out whether laser hair removal is suitable before you decide to proceed.

What happens during a men’s laser hair removal appointment?

Your appointment starts with a look at the area you’d like to treat and a conversation about what you’re hoping to achieve. We’ll discuss your skin type, hair colour and what treatment can and can’t do. You might be surprised why we look at colour but there’s a chance that lighter or gray hair will be more visible when we remove the dark hair.

Consultation and assessment

Your clinician will ask about:

  • Your skin type and any sensitivity

  • Your hair colour and thickness

  • How you currently remove hair

  • What you’re hoping to achieve

This is also a chance to ask about discomfort, possible risks and whether the likely outcome fits your goals.

During treatment

The laser delivers pulses of light to the area being treated. You may feel warmth or a snapping sensation against the skin. How uncomfortable it feels depends on the area and your sensitivity.

Larger areas, such as the back or chest, generally take longer than smaller ones. We can give you a clearer idea of the appointment length once we know which area you’d like to treat.

After your session

Your skin may feel sensitive or look red after a session. Burns, blistering and changes in skin colour are also possible risks. Your clinician will explain the risks and give you aftercare instructions for the area you’ve had treated.

Your aftercare guidance may include:

  • Protecting the treated skin from the sun

  • Using the skincare products your clinician recommends

  • Following the instructions you’re given after treatment

How should men prepare for laser hair removal?

Before your appointment, we’ll explain how to prepare the area you’re having treated. The advice will take your skin and hair into account, so follow the instructions you’re given rather than guessing.

Preparation may include:

  • Avoiding tanning and protecting your skin from the sun

  • Shaving as instructed by the clinic

  • Discussing your skincare, medications and recent sun exposure

How many laser hair removal treatments do men need?

There isn’t one number of laser hair removal sessions that suits every man. That said, 6 to 8 sessions are a sweet spot, but it can vary quite a bit from one to another. Your hair’s growth cycle, its thickness, the area being treated and how it responds all help shape the plan.

Some areas may need more sessions than others. We’ll review your progress as you go, rather than assume every area will respond in the same way.

The goal is less regrowth over time. You may still have hair to manage after a course of treatment, and further sessions may be needed.

Laser hair removal for men vs shaving and waxing

Shaving, waxing and laser deal with hair in different ways. The right choice for you will depend on how much upkeep you’re comfortable with and whether laser is suitable for your skin and hair.

Frequently asked questions about laser hair removal for men

How effective is laser hair removal for men?

Laser hair removal can reduce unwanted regrowth, but the amount of change differs from person to person. Your hair colour and thickness, skin type and the area being treated all matter. An assessment can help you understand what may be realistic for you.

How many sessions does laser hair removal for men require?

You’ll usually need several sessions because hairs move through different growth stages. The number and spacing of appointments will be planned around the area, your hair growth and how you respond.

Is laser hair removal painful for men?

It can be uncomfortable. You may feel warmth or brief snaps against the skin, and some areas can feel more sensitive than others. Ask about what to expect and how discomfort is managed before treatment.

How much does laser hair removal for men cost?

The price will depend on the area you’d like to treat and the sessions you’re likely to need. We can give you more specific cost information after an assessment. Ask about the cost of the full plan and any further treatment you may need.

Is laser hair removal permanent for men?

It can give longer-term hair reduction, but it doesn’t guarantee that all hair is permanently removed. Some regrowth can occur, and you may need further sessions. Your hormones, hair type and response to treatment can affect the outcome.

Finding the right hair removal approach for you

If you’re considering laser hair removal, start with what you’d like to change about your current routine. You might want less hair to maintain in one area, or to explore an alternative to regular shaving or waxing.

We’ll take the time to assess your skin and hair and discuss what’s realistic for you. If you have questions, get in touch with W Medical Aesthetics in Adelaide or book in for an assessment. You can decide what to do once you have the information you need.
