BBL HEROic Treatment Consultation in Adelaide

BBL HEROic uses BroadBand Light rather than laser energy and may be discussed for concerns involving pigmentation, redness and uneven tone. Dr Wong assesses your skin type, pigment pattern and relevant risk factors before discussing whether the procedure is appropriate.

What is BBL HEROic?

BBL HEROic is a pulsed-light device that delivers filtered BroadBand Light. It is different from a laser, which uses a narrower wavelength of light.

Settings are selected according to the skin type, area being assessed and pattern of pigmentation or redness. If texture or scarring is the main concern, another procedure may be discussed instead.

BBL HEROic is mainly considered when the concern involves pigmentation or redness rather than structural texture or scarring. Dr Wong may consider it for superficial pigmentation, persistent redness, small visible vessels, sun damage and an uneven complexion.

What Dr Wong assesses before BBL HEROic

A BBL consultation helps clarify what is causing the visible colour change, whether BBL is appropriate and what recovery you can reasonably expect. This is especially important for patients with melasma, deeper skin tones, recent tanning or a history of pigmentation after inflammation.

At W Medical Aesthetics, Dr Wong considers more than the colour visible on the surface. The assessment may include:

  • Main pigmentation or redness concern
  • Pigment pattern, including possible melasma
  • Skin type and recent tanning
  • Medications and relevant skincare
  • Previous pigment changes and expected recovery

What happens at a BBL appointment

A BBL appointment does not involve injections or surgical incisions. Appointment length depends on the area being assessed and whether BBL is combined with another option.

Skin review

The area is reviewed for changes in skin condition, recent tanning, medications or other factors that may affect suitability.

Preparation and eye protection

The skin is cleansed and protective eyewear is used before light is delivered.

The BBL procedure

The handpiece is moved across the selected area. You may notice bright flashes and brief warmth or a snapping sensation. Settings can be adjusted according to the area and skin response.

Aftercare

Before you leave, the clinic explains cleansing, sun protection and which skin changes should prompt contact.

Expected changes, downtime and aftercare

Individual response varies according to the concern, skin type, area and BBL settings. Temporary warmth, redness, swelling or darkening of selected pigment may occur after BBL and settle at different rates. Another appointment is considered only after the skin has been reviewed and where there is a clinical reason to continue.

Is there downtime?

Downtime varies. Temporary redness, warmth, swelling or darkened pigment may remain visible, and recovery can be more noticeable with higher settings or larger areas.

Recovery can be more noticeable after a combined BBL and MOXI appointment. Dr Wong will explain the likely response during consultation so you can plan around work, exercise and social commitments.

Possible side effects

Possible effects include redness, warmth, swelling, dryness, flaking and temporary pigment darkening. Less common risks include blistering, bruising, prolonged redness, darker or lighter pigmentation and scarring.

Contact the clinic promptly if you develop broken skin, blistering, increasing pain or a reaction that appears to be worsening rather than settling.

BBL aftercare

Follow the personalised instructions provided by W Medical Aesthetics. Routine aftercare advice includes:

  • Cleanse gently as directed
  • Use a simple moisturiser if advised
  • Pause exfoliants and strong active products during recovery
  • Avoid excessive heat and strenuous exercise for the advised period
  • Protect the area from sun exposure and use broad-spectrum sunscreen

General guidance recommends at least SPF 30 and avoiding direct sun exposure for 14 days. Follow the personalised instructions from Dr Wong, as BBL intensity and individual risk can differ.

Do not pick or exfoliate darkened pigment, as allowing it to clear naturally reduces unnecessary irritation.

Frequently asked questions about BBL HEROic

What does BBL feel like?

You may feel brief warmth or a snapping sensation while the light is delivered. Sensitivity varies by person and area, and the clinician can pause or adjust where clinically appropriate.

How many BBL appointments might be appropriate?

The number depends on the concern and individual response. Dr Wong reviews the skin before discussing whether another appointment is clinically appropriate.

Can BBL be considered for melasma?

BBL is not automatically suitable for melasma, and some light or heat exposure can make pigmentation darker. Dr Wong assesses the pigment pattern before discussing whether BBL or another approach is appropriate.

Is there downtime after BBL?

Downtime varies. Redness, warmth or darkened pigment may remain visible, particularly with higher settings or larger areas.

Can I wear makeup after BBL?

Makeup can often be applied once the skin is intact and the clinician has approved it. Use clean applicators and avoid products that sting. Do not apply makeup over blistered or broken skin. When practical, allow the skin to settle for the remainder of the appointment day.
