Thread Lifting

Thread-based treatments are designed to support facial structure and refine contours through the strategic placement of specialised medical-grade threads beneath the skin.

Thread Lifting Treatments

Thread treatment is a minimally invasive medical procedure that may be considered for selected patients with concerns relating to skin laxity or facial support.

At W Medical Aesthetics, treatment is performed by Dr Kee Sing Wong (MBBS, FRACGP), a registered medical practitioner (AHPRA Registration: MED0000996242) with a special interest in aesthetic medicine.

What Are PDO Threads?

PDO (Polydioxanone) threads are absorbable medical sutures that are placed beneath the skin using fine needles or cannulas. Different types of threads may be used depending on the treatment area and clinical indication.

Consultation

Every treatment begins with a comprehensive consultation. Dr Wong will review your medical history, assess your concerns and determine whether thread lifting treatment is clinically appropriate for you. Your consultation will also include a discussion of the potential benefits, limitations, risks and alternative treatment options.

Why Choose Thread Lifting

PDO Threads may help improve the appearance of skin laxity, providing subtle tightening, smoothing, and lifting.

Suitable treatment areas include the face, neck and décolletage. In all these areas, PDO threads aim to support the skin’s natural collagen production, enhancing overall skin quality. Suitability varies between individuals.

Expected outcomes and longevity

Thread lifting is intended to provide temporary structural support to selected areas of the face. Some patients may notice a subtle change in facial contour or the appearance of skin laxity; however, the degree of change varies between individuals.

Any visible change, its onset and its duration depend on factors including the type and number of threads used, treatment area, facial anatomy, skin characteristics and individual healing response.

Initial changes may be noticeable shortly after the procedure, although swelling, tightness or temporary skin irregularities can affect the early appearance. The result generally becomes easier to assess as the area settles. The effects of thread lifting are temporary. Outcomes may last approximately 9-12month, although a particular result or duration cannot be guaranteed.

 Repeat and maintenance treatment

Some patients may consider further treatment after the effects have reduced. The timing and suitability of any repeat or maintenance procedure will be determined through an individual clinical reassessment.

Repeat treatment is not automatically required and will only be recommended when clinically appropriate.

Recovery

Recovery experiences vary. Swelling, bruising, tenderness, tightness, temporary dimpling or skin irregularities may occur following treatment. These effects commonly improve as the treated area settles but may persist.

Patients may need to modify exercise, facial treatments, dental procedures, sleeping position and other activities during the initial recovery period. Individual aftercare instructions will be provided based on the procedure performed.

Patients should contact the clinic if they experience increasing pain, spreading redness, discharge, fever, changes in skin colour or any other unexpected symptoms.

Potential risks and complications

Thread lifting carries potential risks and complications. These may include:

  • Pain, swelling, bruising or tenderness
  • Temporary or persistent dimpling, puckering or contour irregularity
  • Asymmetry
  • Visible or palpable threads
  • Infection
  • Thread migration, breakage or extrusion
  • Persistent discomfort or altered sensation
  • Scarring
  • Injury to a nerve or blood vessel
  • An unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome
  • The possible need for corrective treatment or thread removal

This list is not exhaustive. The risks relevant to the proposed treatment will be discussed during consultation, together with alternative treatment options and the option of having no treatment.

Individual suitability

Thread lifting is not suitable for everyone and is not a substitute for surgical lifting procedures. Before proceeding, Dr Wong will assess the patient’s medical history, facial anatomy, skin characteristics, treatment goals and relevant risk factors.

A consultation does not create an obligation to proceed. Treatment will only be offered when Dr Wong considers it clinically appropriate and the patient has had an opportunity to consider the potential benefits, limitations, risks, recovery and alternatives.

Risks & Complications

Thread lift procedures are generally safe, but as with any cosmetic treatment, there are potential risks. Patients may experience temporary swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the treatment sites. In some cases, mild asymmetry, puckering of the skin, or thread visibility can occur as the tissues settle. Infection, allergic reactions, or longer-lasting irregularities are uncommon but possible. Results can vary between individuals, and in some instances, additional treatments may be required to achieve the desired outcome.
